6. Canadian Harm Reduction Network Community Meeting (Toronto)
The Canadian government has proposed new legislation that will increase prison populations, and they are committed to building new prisons to accommodate them (despite ‘crime’ rates remaining stable or going down). Without a doubt, Canada is moving towards the US-style of justice. More prisons, less justice.
Are you concerned?
Law-and-order legislation and increased prison construction will not make our communities safer. In fact, if things transpire as they have in the US, the result will be just the opposite.
Money spent on new prisons could be spent on increasing income subsidies, affordable housing, effective drug and harm reduction programs, youth programs, etc. - that is, actions shown to be far more effective in diminishing crime than are tougher sentences and additional prisons.
Please join us to talk about what we can do to address this!
Date: Saturday, February 27
Time: 2 to 5 pm
Location: Steelworkers’ Hall, 25 Cecil Street, Toronto

7. Ontario LHIN’s Emergency Room Closings Becomes a Hot Topic
The recent death of a young child linked to the integration of emergency room facilities in the Niagara Falls area has spurred media interest, and even the Ontario Ombudsman has become involved:

http://toronto.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20100128/er_docs_100128/20100128?hub=Toronto
As an interesting aside, innovative research out of Halifax finds that using a psychologist to work with individuals complaining of chest pains was helpful in reducing repeat visits (and reducing ER services). The story notes that of every four patients presenting themselves in ER with chest pains, three had no physical reasons, and suggests an alternate diagnosis instead:
